APRIL 2010

“March came in like a lion, whipping up the water in the bay. Then April cried and stepped aside, and along came pretty little May.” Time is surely flying at West Seattle Montessori School and West Seattle Academy. I was informed on Friday by one of our middle school students that we only have 36 and 1/2 days of school left!

BRAVO preprimary students and teachers for the charming performance of The Sky Is Falling! A special THANK YOU to “Music with Mary” and all who volunteered time and support in order to make this happen. What memorable moments!

CONGRATULATIONS to our 8th grade students for their impressive high school acceptances! Sam Bell will be attending Odea, Olivia Confer will be attending John F. Kennedy, and Daniel Quinn will be attending the Center School.

THANK YOU Renee Hofmann, Brenda Griswold, and our POMS Fundraising Committee for a fabulous and fun TWIG auction. What an amazing night! After expenses we raised ~$17,000 that will go directly to benefit our classrooms and school building.

ANNOUNCEMENTS & REMINDERS

Safety is number one at WSMS and WSA. On Friday, April 2, we conducted a Lock Down after being contacted by the Police Department. (Our school is part of the dispatch system.) Dolores Atwood, acting as Administrator at the time, followed all safety protocols and procedures efficiently and effectively. At our past location, we conducted many Lock Downs to ensure safety of our students. This was the first Lock Down at our new location (beside our beginning of the year Lock Down drill in September). Our students and trained staff performed admirably. We will continue to discuss and research the best ways of keeping our school community safe at West Seattle Montessori and West Seattle Academy.

West Seattle Montessori & Academy will host our First Annual Plant Sale on May 1, 9am to 2pm! We will be inviting the entire community to come and purchase: beautiful bedding plants, fruit and vegetable plants (including special hybrid tomatoes from our own Greenhouse!), flower bulbs, beautiful pre-made flowering pots, an assortment of Mother’s day gifts, coffee, hot chocolate, fresh pastries, and a membership to the “Friends of the Greenhouse.” We will be providing free potting soil for planting your purchases. There will also be entertainment provided by WSMS and WSA students. Please save the date and stay tuned for more details!

Summer sessions are filling up! We have limited availability, so if you’re interested turn in your enrollment forms ASAP or swing by the Main Office.

Our next POMS (Parents Of Montessori Students) parent group meeting is Thursday, May 13 at WSMS at 6:30pm. Committees will meet prior to the general meeting promptly at 6pm. Mark your calendars!

Our NEWLY ELECTED 2010-2011 POMS Board Members:

Brenda Griswold, President

Dawn Dort, Vice President

John Chattin-McNichols will be doing his third and final talk this year in May on Montessori Research. More details to come.
