- Activates develop concentration, independence, organization and coordination.
- As the children experience success, they gain self-esteem and self-confidence
- In an atmosphere of independent discovery and responsibility, the children develop a love of learning. This love extends to all areas of the prepared environment: Practical Life, Sensorial, Cultural, Language and Mathematics
Practical Life
- The exercises in Practical Life, designed to help the child learn to function in his/her everyday environment; young children love to imitate the adults around them. Exercises include pouring water, sweeping the floor and sewing buttons.
- Care of Self and the Environment- Both self-motivation and independence are every much encouraged. Daily the children encounter numerous tasks that build on the independence and self-esteem.
- Art Area- Art is a great place to develop creative expression within the children while also building on their small motor skills, imagination and independence. At the same time they are experimenting with different textures, shapes, mediums and color.
Sensorial
- The Sensorial area is designed t let the children work independently and explore through their five senses, while at the same time developing their fine motor skills, concentration, self-esteem and visual perception concepts about size, shape, color, patterns, etc.
Language
- The language area is set-up with progressive levels of difficulty.
- Pre-language-sorting, matching and sequencing various objects and pictures. These activities promote logical thinking and movement of the eye from left to right (just like we read).
- Phonetic alphabet- through the use of sandpaper, letters and sound of the week the child learns to recognize the letter by sight, sound and touch. The alphabet sounds are learned individually, and then combined to form three letter phonetic words.
- As their reading begins to flow they are introduced to four letter phonetic words, sight words and phrases.
- The classroom has reading books for all levels as well as workbooks. The children are very proud of having their own workbook and their accomplishments in this area.
- Handwriting- we spend a lot of time preparing the children for handwriting by strengthening their finger grip and fine motor skills. Every area of our classroom is filled with activities to make fingers strong for writing.
Math
- Our math area has materials available to all of our children regardless of their age or ability.
- There are many hands-on manipulative used in this area so children not yet writing may still be working with numerals and mathematical concepts.
- Once the child begins recognizing numbers and their quantity, he/she can begin moving on to more advanced math materials such as simple addition and subtraction, odd and even numbers, place value, counting by 10’s, etc.
- Through calendar time, finger plays and songs the children are exposed to many number and counting activities daily.
Cultural
- This is the Montessori form of sciences, and includes geography, botany, zoology, history and physics.
- Books and puzzles are reproduced to identify and classify geographic names, parts of plants and animals.
- Time lines are used to demonstrate sequenced events.
- Experiments are used to explore the nature of sound, light, gravity, magnetism and states of matter.
Work Cycle
- Our classroom provides many activities that develop concentration, fine motor skills and perhaps most importantly it develops a “work cycle”.
- A complete work cycle involves choosing an activity, collecting materials needed, completing the activity and then cleaning up after oneself. It is a combination of many steps that the child is continuously working on to master.
